My garage floor is cracked all over. Is it still worth coating?

In almost every case, yes. Static cracks are routed out, filled and ground flat before anything is coated, and the finished floor covers them permanently. The exception is a slab that is actively moving or has dropped at a joint, which is a concrete problem rather than a coating one, and we will say so at the site visit rather than take the job.

There is old paint on my garage floor. Does all of it have to come off?

Yes. Paint and sealer are only bonded as well as whatever they were rolled onto, usually not very well, and a new coating on top can be no stronger than the layer beneath it. Diamond grinding takes it back to bare, open concrete, and that is included in the quote rather than charged as an extra once it is exposed.

The slab surface is flaking away in patches. Can that be built back?

Napa Garage Floor Coatings Overview

Napa's housing stock is older than most of the area we cover, and the garage slabs have had time to move. What we usually find is hairline cracking across the middle, a spalled strip along the door threshold where water has sat, and one or two patch repairs that never matched. Coat over that and you get a glossy floor with the same cracks still working underneath it.

So the repair is part of the floor here, not something rushed through beforehand. Cracks are routed out and rebuilt, the threshold edge is reformed, then the whole slab takes a penetrating base coat, vinyl flake broadcast to refusal, and a clear polyaspartic top coat. What an Older Napa Slab Needs

On a garage built in the last ten years the coating is most of the job. On a slab poured in the 1960s or 1970s it is maybe half of it, and the half that gets skipped is the reason those floors come back.

Cracks rebuilt, not bridged

Every crack is opened up, cleaned out and filled with a structural repair mortar, then ground flat. A coating stretched over an unrepaired crack telegraphs it back through within a season.

A flat floor out of an uneven slab

Older garage slabs are rarely flat. Trowel ridges, old patch repairs and dips near the door all telegraph through a thin coating. Grinding takes the high spots down and the repair work brings the low spots up, so the finished floor reads as one even surface instead of a shiny version of what was already there.

Old paint and sealer taken off completely

Garage floor paint, concrete sealer and the remains of an old kit all have to come off, not be scuffed and coated over. Whatever is left behind becomes the weakest layer in the finished floor.

Threshold and edges reformed

The strip of concrete under the door takes the weather and is usually the worst part of the slab. It is rebuilt to a clean edge so the coating terminates on sound concrete instead of crumbling material.

Detached shops and workshops too

Workshop slabs, detached garages and barn floors are common here and take the same system, with the flake blend and slip level adjusted for a working space rather than a car park.

Sealed against dust and grit

A bare older slab dusts constantly and holds everything that comes off a gravel drive. Sealed, it sweeps clean and stops shedding fines onto whatever is stored in there.

How Your Napa Install Runs

Site visit and slab assessment. We measure up, map the cracking and spalling, and look over any previous coating. The repair scope and the blend you have chosen from the color chart are priced together, not separately.
Repair and diamond grinding. Cracks and spalled areas are routed, filled and leveled, then the full slab is diamond ground with dust-extracted equipment to open the concrete profile.
Base coat and flake broadcast. The primer goes down first, then the base coat, and vinyl flake is broadcast into it to refusal for full, even coverage.
Scrape back and top coat. Loose flake is scraped off and the clear polyaspartic top coat is applied, which is the coat that carries the gloss, the chemical resistance and the wear.
Handover. We confirm cure times, hand over the cleaning routine and issue the written warranty with the installed system named on it.
